Undergraduate Borrowing Privileges

A picture ID is required to borrow materials from the University of Georgia Libraries. The preferred form of identification is a UGA ID card. A current, government-issued picture ID - such as (but not limited to) a driver's license, Georgia ID card, US passport, or US military ID - may be used instead. Incoming students must be registered for classes to be eligible for borrowing privileges.

Loan Period - The undergraduate loan period is 28 days. Exceptions include: rare books, periodicals, microforms, newspapers, the Leisure Collection, and others materials. There is no limit to the number of items a borrower may check out, with the exception of special permission and Reserve items. The borrower is responsible for all items checked out in his/her name until those items are discharged and cleared from the library account. For more information on loan periods, check here.

Renewals - 2 automatic renewals for most  items. After the 2 automatic renewals, books may be brought to the Circulation Desks at Science, Main or the CML to be discharged and borrowed again. There is no limit on the number of times an item may be borrowed as long as no one else has requested it.

Recalls - Undergraduate students may recall items that are charged out. The loan period of recalled items is shortened. Items recalled by another patron should be returned immediately. Recall overdue fines are $1.00 per day per item. Recalled items cannot be renewed.

Lost or Damaged Items -  Books are marked Lost after being overdue for 56 days. Borrowers who lose library materials are responsible for reimbursing the Libraries for replacement costs. For damaged items, the cost of repair or replacement of damaged items will be assessed by library staff and billed to the borrower.

Payments - Payment for recall fines and lost item replacement costs can be made in person at the Main Library with cash, check, or credit card. Payments can also be made by mail with a check or money order paid to the order of UGA Libraries. Failure to pay library fines/fees may result in the suspension of borrowing privileges and a hold may be placed on the borrower's University records. When Library privileges are restricted, the borrower cannot charge materials, hold a carrel or place requests for materials. Holds on university records prevent borrowers from registering for classes, purchasing athletic tickets, or receiving official copies of their University transcripts. Restrictions and holds will be removed when obligations to the Libraries are cleared.

Notices - Courtesy notices, overdue notices, recall notices, recall overdue notices and bills for lost or damaged items are sent by email. These notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive a notice does not absolve the borrower from responsibility for payment of library fines/fees.
