Graduate Borrowing Privileges

A picture ID is required to borrow materials from the University of Georgia Libraries. While the preferred form of identification is the UGA ID card, a current, government-issued picture ID - such as (but not limited to) a driver's license, Georgia ID card, US passport, or US military ID - may be used instead. You must be enrolled to be eligible for borrowing privileges. If you are an incoming student, you are not eligible to borrow materials until you have registered for classes.

Loan Periods - Books charged to graduates have a loan period of 125 days (1 semester). Exceptions include: rare books, periodicals, microforms, newspapers and others materials. The Leisure Collection circulates for 14 days. Graduate students may check out bound volumes of periodicals for 7 days. For more information on loan periods, check here. There is no limit to the number of items a borrower may check out, with the exception of special permission and Reserve items.

Renewals - 2 automatic renewals for most items. After 2 automatic renewals, books may be brought to the Circulation Desks at Science, Main or the CML to be discharged and borrowed again. There is no limit on the number of times an item may be borrowed as long as no one else has requested it.

Notices - Courtesy notices, overdue notices, recall notices, recall overdue notices and recall fine bills are sent by email. These notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive a notice does not absolve the borrower from responsibility for payment of library fines/fees.

Recalls - Books that are checked out can be recalled. The loan period of items recalled by other users is shortened. Items being recalled should be returned as soon as possible. Recall overdue fines are $1.00 per day. Recalled items cannot be renewed

Lost or Damaged Items -  Books are marked Lost after being overdue for 56 days. A borrower who loses an item is responsible for reimbursing the Libraries for the replacement cost. The cost of repair or replacement of damaged items will be assessed by library staff and billed to the borrower.

Payments - Payment for fines/fees can be made in person at the Main and Science Libraries' circulation desks with cash, check, or credit card. Payments can also be made by mail with a check or money order paid to the order of UGA Libraries. Failure to pay library fines/fees may result in the suspension of borrowing privileges and a hold may be placed on the borrower's University records. When Library privileges are restricted, the borrower cannot charge materials, hold a carrel or place requests for materials. Holds on university records prevent borrowers from registering for classes, purchasing athletic tickets, or receiving official copies of their University transcripts. Restrictions and holds will be removed when obligations to the Libraries are cleared.
