About the collection

Documents published by the State of Georgia from 1876 to date are located in the Georgia State Government Documents collection in the Map and Government Information Library. This collection encompasses audit reports, budget documents, legislative documents, monographs, newsletters, periodicals and serials from agencies including agriculture, arts, community affairs, courts, education, human resources, industry and trade, labor, legislature, natural resources and recreation. Please see the Complete List of State Agencies and Organizations for further information.

Materials published by individual units of the University System of Georgia are not considered state documents in this collection. However, the Board of Regents is a state agency, and as such, its publications are part of the Georgia State Government Documents collection.

Georgia state government documents are classified in a special system that is similar to the U.S. Superintendent of Documents (Sudoc) Classification System. For a complete listing, please see the Official Publications of the State of Georgia List of Classes and Agency Index.

Access

Many state documents can be found in the online catalog. However, some can only be identified through the Georgia State Government Documents Card Catalog located in the Map and Government Information Library; please contact a staff member for assistance. The UGA Libraries also maintain a comprehensive digital repository of state documents from 1994 to the present, which can be located in the Georgia Government Publications Database.

State documents published prior to 1876 are in the Hargrett Library's Georgiana Collection, which is located in the Special Collections Libraries Building, and are accessible through the online catalog.

Georgia Government Publications Database

A project of GALILEO, the Digital Library of Georgia, and the University of Georgia Libraries

In addition to the print collection, the UGA Libraries provide online public access to publications of Georgia state agencies through the Georgia Government Publications Database.  Developed in 1996 as GALILEO's first digital conversion initiative, the GGP contains over 80,000 born-digital publications and scanned print documents released by Georgia state agencies. The GGP provides a comprehensive digital repository of state publications from 1994 to the present, including selected pre-1994 monographs and serials; digitization projects continue for this collection in an effort to provide researchers with a valuable source for online historical research.
