The University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library is celebrating the life and career of late Georgia Football Head Coach and Athletic Director Vince Dooley this fall with a new museum exhibit, Legacy: Vince Dooley, 1932-2022. This display will open on Friday, Sept. 1, at the Special Collections Libraries Building on the University of Georgia campus, just in time for fans to celebrate the start of the 2023 football season.
This exhibit will use original artifacts and rarely seen photos to explore the many aspects of Vince Dooley’s life, from his College Football Hall of Fame coaching career, to his influential career as Georgia’s Athletic Director, to his passion for gardening and his generous support for academics at the University of Georgia.
“Telling the story of Coach Dooley’s life and career is a daunting task. His influence at UGA is almost unmatched in the history of the University and his many passions outside of athletics are equally impressive,” said Jason Hasty, Hargrett Library UGA Athletics history specialist, who curated this exhibit. “Coach Dooley is also such a beloved figure for generations of Georgia fans that I hope this exhibit will prompt our visitors to share their own memories of and stories about him.”
Fans can also kick-off their football weekends with a free tour of this exhibit at 3 p.m. on Fridays before each home football game this season. This tour is free to the public with no prior registration required. For more information call 706-542-6179 or email hasty@uga.edu.
Legacy: Vince Dooley, 1932-2022 will be on display in the Rotunda Gallery of the UGA Special Collections Libraries from September 1, 2021, through spring 2024. Located on the University of Georgia campus in Athens, the galleries are open to visitors for free from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with extended evening hours until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
