A Note about Public Petitions

Many were destroyed in 1834 when the old Parliament building burned down. In addition, originals were routinely destroyed up until about 1951 after consideration by Parliament. The relatively few surviving printed copies of public petitions from this period are preserved in the Parliamentary Archives in London (and possibly a few other libraries in microformat). The text of a very few public petitions may also be preserved in the context of other sets of British documents such as the sessional papers.
