Streaming Media Policy for Collections

Overview

UGA Libraries provides access to streaming media in support of the curricular needs of the University. However, the high cost of streaming media combined with budget constraints requires some limits on what the Libraries is able to acquire.

UGA Libraries offers access to streaming media through several platforms, including Films on Demand, AVON, Alexander Street Press, Docuseek, Kanopy, Swank, and other options. Please search these databases for films relevant to course content prior to requesting that the Libraries purchase a streaming title.

Guidelines for UGA Libraries Purchase of Streaming Rights

UGA Libraries provide streaming media support for courses whenever possible, within the limits of our budget, vendor licensing terms, and the need to distribute resources equitably across departments. (Typical streaming rights cost between $150–$600 per film per year.)

We will license streaming media for courses that meet the following criteria:

  • The course is part of a degree-granting program.
  • Streaming access is needed for Course Reserves.
  • We suggest a maximum of 5 new streaming titles per course to help manage costs and ensure equitable distribution of resources across departments. If your course requires additional titles, please contact us—we will work with you to identify priorities and explore all available options to meet your needs.

Please note:

  • Setting up streaming licenses with vendors can take time—Please plan ahead when requesting materials.
  • When a streaming license expires, renewal decisions will be based on the same criteria above.
  • The policy for licensing streaming media may be adjusted from semester to semester based on available funding.

Submit course reserves streaming video purchase requests through the Course Reserves Submission Form.
