The School of Medicine (SOM) utilizes an embedded library service model successfully proven at the Augusta/UGA Medical Partnership since 2010. The library team is composed of faculty librarians who are dedicated entirely to supporting the medical education program, actively participating in monthly and annual curriculum planning meetings to seamlessly integrate health information literacy into the coursework. To ensure maximum accessibility for students and faculty, the librarians maintain centrally located office space, currently in Russell Hall and adding the new library space new SOM building upon its completion in January 2027.
The library team's involvement begins at orientation and extends across all four years. Librarians partner with faculty to deliver evidence-based medicine instruction, co-teach credit-bearing sessions, and train students in evaluating biomedical resources and utilizing mobile medical technology. Beyond structured classroom instruction, the librarians provide individualized support to students for daily learning and extracurricular scholarship, while simultaneously assisting faculty and staff with literature searches and publishing needs. The librarians also support the Graduate Medical Education residency at St. Mary’s Community Hospital and at Community Internal Medicine of Athens by providing point-of-care reference support.
