The Medical School Library is staffed by two librarians who are also faculty members.
Julie K. Gaines, MLIS, AHIP

Professor of Medical Education
Julie K. Gaines, MLIS, AHIP, is the inaugural Director of the UGA School of Medicine Library and Professor of Medical Education. She has devoted 16 years as the Campus Director of the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership Campus Library in Athens, Georgia. Since 2010, she has pioneered the embedded librarian model as a core educator fully integrated into the medical curriculum, teaching Evidence-Based Medicine, facilitating community and population health sessions, and supporting faculty, students, and staff with research, technology, and library collaboration.
Beyond her campus leadership, including serving on the UGA School of Medicine Faculty Advisory Council, Julie actively contributes to the profession through various regional boards, including the Foothills AHEC Board of Directors, the Foothills AHEC Pathway to Medical School Program Planning Committee, multiple library advisory committees, and the Medical Library Association.
Julie earned her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. She is a member of Beta Phi Mu, a Distinguished Member of Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP), and a former National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow. Her accolades include the 2018 Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award, the Peer-Nominated Teaching Award for Large Group Teaching, Faculty Mentor and Faculty Member of the Year honors, and multiple Exemplary Teaching Awards.
Kathryn Junco, MLIS, AHIP
Clinical Information Librarian
Kathryn Junco, MLIS, AHIP, is a Clinical Information Librarian at the University of Georgia Medical Partnership Campus Library in Athens, Georgia. She has been with the Medical Library since January 2026. Kathryn received her MLIS in Library and Information Science from Valdosta State University in 2022 and prior to that her B.S. in Forest Resources, Fisheries, and Wildlife from the University of Georgia in 2017. She is a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) and has a Systematic Review Services Specialization from the Medical Library Association.
