Digitize Your To-Do List with KanbanFlow

This lightning talk will revolve around the Kanban method as a successful project management method. will be introduced as a user-friendly tool for implementing Kanban in the workplace to improve performance outcomes and deal with shifting and measuring priorities. A comparison will be made of digital versus paper to-do lists for librarians and library staff. Features of this free web-based application will be covered including: collaboration between team members, Pomodoro time-tracking, dates and deadlines, recurring tasks, sub-tasks, and digital board customization.


Assessment in Research Instruction

Research and Instruction librarians often teach only one or two instruction sessions in a given university class. How can librarians use assessment for these short periods? This lightning session will first describe some possible assessment goals, including determining student satisfaction, student competency, instruction content, and instruction quality. Ms. Riggs will then show a few possible methods for assessment using Qualtrics and examples from some UNIV classes.


Cooperative Teaching Circles: A Collaboration between Scholarly Communications and Research & Instruction

A partnership between Research & Instruction and Scholarly Communications developed in response to Research & Instruction's need to better understand and deal with increasing patron interests in open access publishing, SciHub, copyright, and fair use. After surveying librarians to gauge their interests in these scholarly communications topics, we hosted a series of teaching circles.  Our first teaching circle was on how to distinguish among reputable and predatory open access journals. Our second topic was on the illegal site SciHub. We wish to continually engage librarians in identifying topics of interest, and keep our series in sync with emerging information technologies and the respective intellectual property issues they raise for the public services librarian.


On the Front Lines in Access Services

The Access Services department has expanded over the years to offer a diverse range of services from bike loans to book retrieval and document delivery. Access Services is often the first point of contact a patron has with the library, and members of its staff are on duty during all regular library hours. The department is also responsible for the behind the scenes work of shelving and stacks maintenance. In my lightning talk, I will take the audience on a tour of the units and locations that make up the Access Services department here at the UGA Libraries and give a quick overview of the work day experience on the front lines in Access Services.


Strengthening UGA–Community Relations: UGA Libraries’ Community Outreach Project in Griffin

Finding ways to strengthen relations with local communities is always of primary concern to university administrators, particularly at a branch campus like that of Griffin.  The local community and the UGA Griffin Campus have a long history of mutual support extending back for more than a century.  Today, the UGA Griffin Campus continues to grow conspicuously with the erection of new buildings and research centers - and a new fence around its perimeter - under the watchful eyes of Griffin citizens and administrators looking for evidence of value to the community.

Academic libraries are uniquely positioned to build bridges between campuses and local communities at a grass-roots level. This talk explores the progress of UGA Libraries’ Fairmont Community outreach project, from its inception as a simple reference question through its development at town hall meetings, conferences, an oral history project, and beyond.     


Godwin's Brain or a Rebellious Sphere?: The Gömböc and the Science Library

The Science Library recently partnered with the UGA Math Department to display a Gömböc, a self-righting object of geometric importance, which the department received as a gift from a wealthy promoter of math literacy. To announce its arrival, we hosted a contest inviting students to submit creative answers to the "What am I?"  sign posted on the Gömböc's glass enclosure, anchored smack in the middle of the library commons. Following the contest, we created an interactive touchscreen exhibit that highlights the winning answers, showcases illustrated versions of particularly hilarious submissions, and displays background information on the Gömböc and its mathematical virtues. To meet demand and sustain interest, the Math Department lent us another Gömböc to check-out for 3 hour reserve, encouraging students to test and observe its eccentric behavior first-hand. This presentation will conclude with a brief discussion on what this taught us about creating and sustaining successful exhibits in the Science Library.
