Collection Development Policy

Mission of the Libraries and of Collection Development

The University of Georgia Libraries advance the University’s mission and support the free exchange of ideas by providing the best possible access to recorded knowledge in accordance with the Libraries’ stated collection policies and the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights.   The UGA Libraries embody and uphold the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion alongside its mission “to foster the understanding of and respect for cultural differences necessary for an enlightened and educated citizenry.[1]”  In support of this, an overarching commitment to diversity, intellectual freedom, accessibility, collaboration, and outreach informs the Libraries' collection development program.  Libraries’ materials are selected to support the instructional and research needs of the university community. The Libraries strive to balance access to, and ownership of, information resources that offer the widest possible range of viewpoints.   The UGA Libraries do not remove, at the request of an individual or group, material which has been selected for the collection according to criteria in the Libraries' stated collection policies.
