Job Summary

The marketing and circulation manager is responsible for promoting The Georgia Review in order to drive new subscriptions and maximize subscriber retention for both print and digital formats of the journal. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, developing creative ways to market new subscriptions and retain current subscribers; coordinating local and national events; managing social media accounts; writing and sending digital and direct mail marketing; fulfilling and processing print and digital subscriptions and maintaining database of subscribers; preparing sales and distribution reports; processing, tracking, and depositing payments; and assisting in the supervision of student workers. Successful completion of the position’s duties and responsibilities requires close collaboration with The Georgia Review’s editorial, production, and business staff.

Activities and decisions are varied in nature, requiring a high degree of independent action and judgment in solving both common and unusual problems. Unusual cases or questionable matters are resolved with this position’s supervisor or other appropriate positions. This position reports to the editor of The Georgia Review.

Duties and Responsibilities



Pursues local, regional, and national partnerships. Makes recommendations regarding advertising placements and expenditures. Oversees the design of marketing materials. Create and manage GR’s digital and print marketing campaigns. Writes press releases and public service announcements. Sends promotional materials to individuals, media, and bookstores recommended by contributors. Manages incoming advertising sales and initiates ad exchanges. Conducts and reports on marketing research and analysis. Oversees ecommerce store management.

Schedules, edits, and manages posts to the GR site and to social media accounts, including Facebook and Twitter. Seeks out opportunities to convert social media followers into subscribers. Develops exclusive online content and monitors production schedule.  Works with the web developer/designer to make use of analytics to monitor and improve performance of GR’s website and social media accounts. 

Coordinates local and national events by planning, organizes, and publicizing GR readings, issue release launches, and other public programs. Assists in managing sales table at events, readings, book fairs, and conferences. Works with the web developer/designer to create subscription forms, invitations, and other print items for conferences, readings, events, etc.

Represents The Georgia Review on the UGA Arts PR Group and the Strategic Communications Group and subscribes to their respective listservs.  Coordinates and publicizes the Review’s participation in Spotlight on the Arts.

Collaborates with editor and business manager in writing grant proposals to secure marketing funding.











Fufills and processes print and digital subscriptions and single-copy orders using QuickFill database software and online interfaces, which includes preparing and mailing subscription and single-copy order acknowledgments. Manages QuickFill database with regular batch postings, month-end closing, consistency checks, backups, and updates; generates and mails bills and renewal notices in a timely manner. Prepares monthly reports for new orders, renewals, and expirations, and shares that information at weekly staff meetings.  Coordinates journal exchange subscriptions.  Collaborates with the business manager in the coordination of the annual gift subscription campaign that takes place in September/October.  Maintains subscription rate charts and provides updated charts to global subscription agencies annually and when requested.

Exports and sends emails of current subscriber list to printer for mailing of each new issue on the direction of the managing editor.

Prepares and mails periodical-rate issues quarterly and as needed.  Provides quarterly consignment delivery and account oversight for local stores selling single copies of The Georgia Review. Prepares and maintains accurate records on the sales, distribution, and mailing of print issues for both internal record keeping and the annual USPS Statement of Ownership, Management, and Circulation. Maintains inventory counts of back and current issues.

Processes and deposits all payments in accordance with departmental and University regulations.  Tracks payments on daily, weekly, and monthly ledger spreadsheets.


Assists in the hiring, training, and supervising of student employees, including students in the Federal Work Study program.


Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the department by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as required.


Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 3 years professional experience in marketing, social media, project management, or publishing.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies
  • Considerable skill in using Microsoft Office Suite software, especially Excel and Word, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn HTML, WordPress, Adobe Dreamweaver, and other digital platforms and markup languages.
  • Ability to use discretion with confidential information.
  • Ability to use independent judgment.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with WordPress, Filemaker Pro, MailChimp, Google Analytics, Zapier, and QuickFill preferred. Relevant graduate degree strongly preferred. Supervisory experience preferred.
