With silk and nylon diverted to the war effort, two students in Alpha Delta Pi paint their legs so it appears they are wearing stockings. Various sources suggest using a wash made of cocoa, tea or gravy coloring. To complete the illusion, a steady-handed stocking-maker would use an eyebrow pencil to draw a "seam" on the back of her leg. (Image 197)
