    Construction of the SLC is on schedule and has not experienced any setbacks. The building is scheduled to be finished by September 1, 2002. After it is furnished and equipped, it will likely open for the spring semester of 2003. Full article
     
    "Learning Center Gets a Lift: Housing Firm Donates" (Athens Daily News, April 11, 2001)
    An Athens apartment complex, The Abbey, has donated $25,000 of student security deposit interest toward a study room in the SLC. While construction of the building is funded by the state, donors may sponsor some of the equipment that each room will require. Full article

    Emphasizes the originality of the concept behind the SLC, in which an electronic library is integrated with classroom and study space.     "Putting Learning at the Center of Campus" (Columns, March 1, 1999)
    University Librarian Bill Potter notes the insufficient number of group study areas in many academic libraries nationwide. The SLC will provide UGA students with about 100 rooms for this purpose. Potter cites students' need to work "in collaborative ways". Full article

    The four-story, 200,000 square-foot SLC will be the crown jewel of UGA, located at the center of campus. Its architecture, including a grand lobby and an illuminated cupola, recall the academic mission of the University. Fully state-funded, the SLC will be joined to a sister building in the future.
