Moderator Training: The Role and Practice of Deliberation
This workshop teaches individuals how to lead or convene deliberative forums in their communities and/or organizations.
During the course, participants will:
-
Identify the characteristics of the various forms of public discourse deliberation.
-
Differentiate deliberation from other forms of public discourse such as debate, consensus and compromise.
-
Explore the role of deliberation in democracy and public policy.
-
Gain insight about citizenship “awareness” – or the idea that each citizen has political abilities and responsibilities.
-
Explore the transitions from public opinion and public judgment to public common ground.
-
Identify the skill sets needed to convene, lead and record deliberative forums.
Receive an opportunity to actively engage in deliberative forums. -
Learn methods for promoting networking with others who are engaged in National Issues Forums.

Students seeking to develop leadership skills

Members of civic organizations or community groups

Individuals interested in forming issue-based discussion groups or action committees
