GIL-Find Searching

  • Use quotation marks around phrases: "civil war"
  • Use an asterisk for truncation: biochem*
  • Change the drop-down menu to title or author for a more precise search
  • Use Library of Congress Subject Headings: If you're searching for books on a topic but some of your results seem irrelevant, find one good book in your list. Click on the title and look at the middle of the screen for the "Subjects." These are the Library of Congress subject headings for your topic. [show me an example] Click on one to link to other relevant books, or run another search using those subject headings and changing "All Fields" to "Subject" in the drop-down menu.
