Note: Many of these items are located in the Georgia Room in the Hargrett Library on the Third Floor. It is open 8-5 Monday through Friday and 1-5 on Saturday.

Austin, Jeannette Holland. 30,638 Burials in Georgia. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., c1995. (Georgia Room F285.A887 1995, third floor) The list was compiled from headstones and markers in 600 cemeteries located in nearly 100 Georgia counties.

Brooke, Ted O. Georgia Genealogical Workbook. La Grange, GA: Family Tree, 1987. (Main Ref F285.B7570 1987 and Georgia Room F285.B75 1987, third floor)  Covers basic sources and techniques. Includes data checklists. Provides some listings of library holdings.

Colonial Records of the State of Georgia. Atlanta: Franklin Printing and Publishing,1984-. (Georgia Room F281.C7191, third floor; also in 4th floor stacks) An index is shelved with the set in the Georgia Room and in Main Reference.

Chicago: American Library Association, 1995.  (Main Ref CS9.W74 1995)  Teaches the genealogist how to organize information for easy access. Covers sources on ancestors with special attention to African American and Native American sources.

Sperry, Kip. A Survey of American Genealogical Periodicals and Periodical Indexes.  Detroit: Gale, 1978. (Main Ref Z5313.U5S65)  Discusses types of periodical literature in which genealogical information can be located, how to use periodical indexes effectively, and includes chapters discussing standard indexes (Jacobus, Waldenmaier, etc.). Includes a list of selected journal titles and a listing of other sources.

Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1968.  (Main Ref CS43.A42) Short genealogies for each person named, including some biographical information in most cases. Each volume is separately indexed. Vol. 1 covers Albany, N.Y.,only. Vol. 2 covers Columbia County, N.Y. only. Vols. 3-4 cover all the states.

American Family Immigration History Center. Ellis Island On-line. URL: http://www.ellisisland.org/. According to the AFIHC, the site contains archival information on more than "22 million passengers and members of ships crews [who] entered the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York between 1892 and 1924."

Burke, John Bernard. MacKenzie, Georgia Norbury. Colonial Families of the United States of America, in Which is Given the History, Genealogy, and Armorial Bearings of Colonial Families Who Settled in the American Colonies from the Time of the Settlement of Jamestown... Parker, J. Carlyle. Going to Salt Lake City to Do Family History Research. Turlock, CA: Marietta Publishing Co., 1996. (Main Ref Z733.C55P37 1996. Shelved after Main Ref CS49.S65 1984)  Explains how to use LDS facilities in Salt Lake City and at Family History Centers around the country.

RootsWeb.  URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/  The searchable surname list provides contact lists of others working on the same line.  Includes the genealogy web for states, including Georgia.

Local History

For the Athens area, there is much useful information in the Heritage Room, Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter St., Athens, GA 30606. Tel.: (706) 613-3650 ext. 350. Hours: M-Th. 9a.m.-9p.m., F-Sat. 9a.m.-6p.m., Sun. 2p.m.-6p.m.

The collection includes CD-ROMs and books with published local deed, mortgage, estate, marriage, and court records, newspapers, military service records, directories, fire insurance maps, works by Athens residents and much more. There are CD-ROMs for family searches and substantial Georgia materials.

Cote, Richard N. Local and Family History in South Carolina: A Bibliography. Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1981. (Z5313.U6 S630, second floor)  A wealth of information on South Carolina genealogical sources.

Filby, P. William. A Bibliography of American County Histories. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1985. (E180.F540 1985, fourth floor) Includes regional histories. The bibliography covers theses and dissertations, commission reports, society publications, and other ephemeral sources as well as published materials.

Genealogy and Local History. Sanford, NC: Microfilming Corporation of America. 1979-. (MFC CS47.G460, basement) See also Genealogy and Local History: Guide (CS47.G460, shelved in the microform area in the basement)The Guide provides information about the sources included and also contains name, title, geographic, and author indexes.

Military Records

For military regimental histories, look in the UGA Libraries' Catalog GIL, under the subdivisions for the various wars, (e.g., United States History Civil War, (1861-1865) Regimental Histories) or under the name of the military unit, (e.g., Georgia Infantry Floyd Rifles).

Groene, Bertram Hawthorne. Tracing Your Civil War Ancestor. Winston-Salem, NC:Blair, c1995. (Main Ref CD3047.G76 1995)  Introduces and describes the basic sources of information on individual Civil War soldiers. Includes sections on state and national archives.

Heitman, Francis Bernard. Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army from Its Organization, September 29, 1789, to March 2, 1903, vol. 1-2.Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1965. (Main Ref U11.U5H6 1965)  Summarizes military records of higher ranking officers and lists all officers.

Bowie, MD: Heritage Books,1986. (Main Ref CS68.R44 1986)  Arranged by war, this index provides microfilm call numbers for names appearing in various types of records. Provides samples and descriptions of federal military records.

Schweitzer, George K. Civil War Genealogy. Knoxville, TN: Schweitzer, c1996. (Main Ref E494.S35 1996) Covers archives, national publications, state publications, local sources and military unit histories.

Birth, Marriage and Death Records

Many vital records published in newspapers and official periodicals are available in the Libraries. You should consult the online catalog GIL using the subject headings:

"place name newspapers"  e.g., Atlanta (Ga.) Newspapers;

 "registers of births, etc. (place name)" e.g., registers of births, etc. Georgia Athens;

"death notices (place name)" e.g., death notices Georgia;

"marriage records (place name)" e.g., marriage records Georgia Baker County;

or "obituaries (place name)" e.g., obituaries Georgia Savannah.

Information may also be located using the heading "(place name) genealogy."

Ship and Immigrant Lists

American Family Immigration History Center. Ellis Island On-line. URL: http://www.ellisisland.org/. According to the AFIHC, the site contains archival information on more than "22 million passengers and members of ships crews [who] entered the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York between 1892 and 1924."

Newspapers

The Main Library of the University of Georgia Libraries has a vast collection of newspapers on microfilm, including large numbers of old Georgia newspapers.  To check UGA holdings, look under the name of the newspaper in the online UGA Libraries' Catalog GIL (e.g., Atlanta Constitution) or under the geographical location, e.g., Madison (Ga.) newspapers or Bibb County (Ga.) newspapers.  The reels of microfilm are shelved in call number order in the basement of the Main Library.

A guide, Newspaper Indexes in the University of Georgia Libraries: A Geographical and Chronological Listing, is available in the rack at the entrance to the Main Reference Department.

The publications listed below will assist in identifying the names of U.S. newspapers, past and present:

American Newspapers, 1821-1936: A Union List of Files Available in the United States and Canada. New York: Kraus Reprint Corporation, 1967. (Main Ref Folio PN4855.A43 1967. Shelved at Main Reference Desk--Media)  This arrangement is by state, then municipality. The entries contain the name, frequency and years of publication of U.S. newspapers.

The Georgia Newspaper Project Holdings List. Athens, GA: University of Georgia Libraries, 1991-. (Main Ref PN4897.G6S47. Shelved at Main Reference Desk)  An index of Georgia newspapers in microfilm at the UGA Main Library, arranged by geographic location.

Henritze, Barbara K. Bibliographic Checklist of African American Newspapers. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., c1995. (Main Ref PN4882.5.H46 1995)  An exhaustive list of historically Black Newspapers, but it does not identify where they are housed.

United States Newspaper Program National Union List. Dublin, Ohio, 1993. (Main Ref MFC PN4855.U55 1993.  Shelved at Reference Desk--Media)  This microfiche set locates newspapers holdings microfilmed in the United States Newspaper Program (USNP).

Census and Federal Government Resources and Guides

There are two brochures available in the Reference Room rack by the entrance describing census name sources in the UGA Libraries:  Federal Census Schedules and Federal Mortality Census Schedules, 1850-80. Using Soundex Codes for Census Records, an explanation of how to find coded surnames in certain census schedules, is available at the Periodicals Information Desk in the basement.

The Main Library has census schedules dating back to 1790.  Schedules through 1920 are available for the southeastern states.  Many of these are indexed.  The indexes can be found by searching the online catalog by state (e.g., Georgia census).  Many of these indexes are located in the microform area in the basement of the Main Library.  Some general guides include:
