Research in the Classics

I. General Resources in the Classics

A. Art and Architecture

1. Art
a. Encyclopedias
The Book of Art: A Pictorial Encyclopedia of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture. 10 vols. New York: Grolier, 1965.
N31.B6 (Seventh Floor)

Volume 1, Origins of Western Art, and Volume 10, How to Look at Art, are of the most relevance to students of the classics. The encyclopedia is indexed and has bibliographies.
The Dictionary of Art. 34 vols. New York: Grove's Dictionaries, 1996.
Main Ref N31.D5
The Encyclopedia of World Art. 16 vols. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1959-83.
Main Ref Folio N31.E5

Grove's The Dictionary of Art and McGraw-Hill's The Encyclopedia of World Art rank among the most important English language encyclopedias of art. They are authoritative, well illustrated, and generally unsurpassed sources of background information on all aspects of world art. The Encyclopedia of World Art is better illustrated than The Dictionary of Art; but The Dictionary of Art has the advantage of recency. Both encyclopedias should be explored for a thorough encyclopedic overview of an art topic.
Histoire generale de l'art. 2 vols. Paris: Flammarion, 1950-55.
Folio N5300.H673 (Seventh Floor)
Larousse Encyclopedia of Prehistoric and Ancient Art. London: Paul Hamlyn Ltd, 1962.
N5300.H987a (Seventh Floor)
The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Art. 5 vols. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1969.
N33.M23 (Seventh Floor)

This is a fine encyclopedia which offers more concise articles than the comprehensive The Dictionary of Art and The Encyclopedia of World Art. It is very good for a quick overview of an art topic.
The Praeger Encyclopedia of Art. 5 vols. New York: Praeger Publishers, 1971.
N33.P68 (Seventh Floor)

See the annotation for The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Art.
The Praeger Picture Encyclopedia of Art; A Comprehensive Survey of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture and Crafts, Their Methods, Styles and Technical Terms, from the Earliest Times to the Present Day. New York: F. A. Praeger, 1958.
Folio N5300.P897 (Seventh Floor)

This is a well-illustrated encyclopedia with one hundred ninety-two color plates. The text is in English and German.
Propylaen Kunstgeschichte in Achtzehn Banden. 18 vols. Berlin: Propylaen Verlag, 1967-1974.
N5300.P78 (Seventh Floor)
Summa Artis: Historia General del Arte. Madrid: Espasa Calpe, S. A., 1948-.
N5300.P634s (Seventh Floor)

Volume 4, El arte griego hasta la toma de Corinto por los romanos (146 A. J. C.) and Volume 5, El arte romano hasta la muerte de Diocleciano are two of the several volumes of this encyclopedia which pertain to art in ancient times.

E. Periodicals Indexes

1. Computerized Indexes
Anthro Lit (Anthropological Literature) on Disc, annual. New York: G. K. Hall & Co., 1994-.
CD-ROM area (Jackson Street Side of Reference Room, Main Library)

This is the electronic equivalent of Anthropological Literature: An Index to Periodical Articles and Essays (q.v.), a publication of the Tozzer Library of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University.
Art Abstracts, monthly. New York: The H. W. Wilson Company, 1984-.
GALILEO

Two-hundred-sixty-eight art journals are indexed by Art Abstracts. Art history, archaeology, and architecture are a few of the numerous classics-related topics that can be explored in this database.
Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI), weekly. Philadelphia: Institute for Scientific Information, 1987-.
http://www.webofscience.com

The A&HCI is accessible via the University of Georgia Libraries' Home Page (www.libs.uga.edu/resource.html).
Arts & Humanities Search, weekly. Philadelphia: Institute for Scientific Information, 1980-.
GALILEO

Arts & Humanities Search, like the A&HCI, which is cited above, indexes over 1, 300 journals in the arts and the humanities, including many classics journals. It also selectively covers articles on subjects in the arts and the humanities which have been published in over 5, 000 journals in the sciences and the social sciences. This database may be searched by author, title keyword, and several other methods. "Citation searching," also called "cited reference searching" or "cited author searching," is, for example, a special feature of Arts & Humanities Search and the A&HCI, which examines bibliographies of articles and enables the researcher to create bibliographies of articles whose authors have cited the published works of other authors. Book reviews, theatrical performance reviews, and several other types of reviews are also indexed by Arts & Humanities Search and the A&HCI. Arts & Humanities Search and the AH&CI are the electronic equivalent of the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (q.v.), which is cited below in the "Printed Indexes" section of this bibliography.
Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals (Avery). Los Angeles: Getty Information Institute.
http://www.gii.getty.edu/aka/search-descr_pub.html

This Web version of the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals covers the architectural journal literature from 1977 to 1994 and lends access to articles on the history of architecture, architectural design, and other aspects of the field.
Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA), quarterly. Santa Monica, CA: Getty Information Institute/Institut de l'information scientifique et technique, 1973-.
CD-ROM area (Jackson Street Side of Reference Room, Main Library)

BHA indexes the literature of Western art and architecture, with its scope ranging from the fourth century B. C. to the present. It covers books, exhibition catalogs, dissertations, and journal articles from over 2, 500 periodicals. BHA is an excellent source of information on art and is very easy to search electronically. Cf. its print counterpart, cited under the heading "Printed Indexes."
Current Contents, weekly. Philadelphia: Institute for Scientific Information, 1992-.
GALILEO

Current Contents examines the tables of contents of more than 7, 000 academic journals in many disciplines, including the classics and other fields of the arts and humanities. Its timeliness and vast scope of journal coverage make it an outstanding resource in which the researcher may perform subject searches, author searches, and a variety of other specialized searches. One special feature allows the user to display a journal's current table, or recent tables, of contents. Like a number of other databases, Current Contents is useful for locating book reviews. Cf. ArticleFirst and ContentsFirst, which are not cited in this bibliography, but are available on the General Indexes menu of GALILEO.

MLA International Bibliography, deciannually. New York: Modern Language Association, 1963-.
GALILEO

The MLA International Bibliography indexes critical articles, essays, books, and other forms of research in the world's modern languages and literatures. It, thus, does not cover ancient classical languages and literatures. However, with its coverage of the journals of comparative literature, the MLA International Bibliography is relevant to research in the classics in its provision of electronic access to writings that comparatively examine modern writers and ancient writers. It, furthermore, comprehensively covers Greek and Latin literature from 800 A. D. onward. By indexing publications in language and linguistics, the MLA International Bibliography lends access to research into ancient languages and linguistics. The MLA International Bibliography is, therefore, a useful adjunct to the other indexes cited in this section. Cf. Linguistic Bibliography and Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA).

PCI Web is an interdisciplinary, computerized index to the contents of over two thousand publications in the humanities and the social sciences, from their first issues to 1990/1991. The indexing of a few of the periodicals in PCI Web is back to the late eighteenth century. However, the indexing of a greater number of periodicals in the database is back to their nineteenth-century publishing origins. PCI Web is a boon to the scholar who needs electronic access to the contents of the early volumes of periodicals--information that, heretofore, has been difficult to come by.

F. Editions of the Works of Classical Writers

1. Appropriate Editions for Graduate and Undergraduate Papers

Graduate students writing term papers, theses, or dissertations in the classics should generally cite editions published by B. G. Teubner or Oxford University Press. Among classicists, the Teubner and Oxford editions are considered authoritative and are, thus, suitable for scholarly writing and research at the graduate level and beyond.

Authoritative, or definitive, editions are not so important to undergraduates writing term papers and reports in the classics. The undergraduate may feel free to choose other editions than Teubner or Oxford, but he/she would be wise to talk with his/her professor concerning the appropriateness of an edition before starting the writing project. An excellent choice for the undergraduate would be the Harvard University Press editions, which are a part of the Loeb Classical Library Series.

To search The UGA Libraries' Catalog on GALIN for specific editions of a writer's works, use such commands as these:

  • f au aeschylus and pu teubner
  • f pu oxford and au homer
  • f all loeb library and au euripides
The search label pu restricts the search to publishers' names and au to authors' names. The word all, on the other hand, scans the full computerized database record.
