Basic Search

How can I do a basic search on PsycINFO?

The default basic search options for PsycINFO are shown in the image below, followed by an explanation of what each type of search does.

PsycINFO basic search screen
  • Standard Search is the default search. Words typed together are searched as a phrase. Use the word "and" to search for separate keywords.
Example: aggression from television viewing    finds only articles with that exact phrase
    (very few articles!)
Example: aggression and television   finds articles with both keywords in any order (many articles!)
  • All Words finds articles with all the keywords in any order (same as using "AND" in standard search)
Example: aggression television   finds articles with both keywords in any order (many articles!)

  • Any Words finds articles with any of the keywords in the search box. Use this type of search if you want to search for articles using similar terms.
Example: television tv   finds articles on either television or tv (very broad search!)

  • Exact Phrase finds articles with an exact phrase.
Example: video game violence   finds articles with that exact phrase in that exact order
    (very few articles!)
