Primary
sources come in all shapes and sizes and are located in both the special collections departments and in the general collections of the UGA Libraries. You can find many primary sources in the Libraries online catalog GIL. When searching in GIL you can isolate primary sources from the general collections using several approaches:
- Choose Keyword Search. Click "Narrow My Search." Scroll down to "Item Type", Click "Archive/Manuscript" and hold down the <ctrl> button then click "Mixed Material/Collection." At bottom of page click "Narrow My Search." At the main search page type your topic-related terms in the search box(es). [Show me...]
- Choose keyword search. Click "Narrow My Search." Scroll down to "Location" and click "Hargrett" or "Russell" or "Media." At bottom of page click "Narrow My Search." At the main search page type your topic-related terms in the search box(es). [Show me...]
- Choose keyword search. Type your topic-related search terms in the first boxes. Next add specialized terms for primary sources such as correspondence, diaries, early works to 1800, personal narratives, sources. [Show me... ]
- Limit your
search by publication date to include only materials written during
the time period for which you need primary sources. [Show
me...]
These methods for finding primary sources in GIL are only a starting point. Some primary sources in the library are not listed in Gil. Staff in special collections departments and at the reference desk can help you locate this material.
