Google It!

Searching better...faster...smarter

Here are some tips that will help you to search the Web more efficiently and get better results. We'll use Google as our example, but the same principles apply to most search engines.

Use Advanced Search!

It sounds more difficult than the basic search, but it's not. In fact, Advanced Search makes it easier for you to find what you want. It lets you combine your keywords in different ways and limit your results to different types of sites.

Options:

  • all - This is the default, and works in the same way as the basic search screen, i.e. it finds all the words, but not necessarily as a phrase or in that specific order.

    e.g. smoking prevention will find:

    • smoking prevention
    • prevention of smoking
    • prevention programs produce reductions in smoking

  • exact phrase - Use this if you're looking for an exact phrase.

e.g. smoking prevention will find only items containing the phrase "smoking prevention", not "prevention of smoking" or any other variation.

  • at least one - This option lets you enter a choice of words for the same concept, and it will find anything with any one (or more) of those words. This way you can make sure you don't miss something because you're using one word for something and they are using a different word for the same thing.

e.g. adolescent teen teenager will find items containing either adolescent, or teen, or teenager.

e.g. volunteer volunteers volunteering will find items containing either volunteer, or volunteers, or volunteering.

  • without - Here, you can make the search omit words you do not want in your results.

    e.g. all: dolphins  without: football
will find items about dolphins, but exclude all those that mention the Miami Dolphins football team.

Combine terms in multiple fields to really specify what you are looking for.

e.g.
all: artists
at least one: latina chicana
without: sculpture sculptor

will find items about Latina/Chicana artists, but not those working in sculpture.

Limiting:

If you get too many results, try limiting your search to pages where your word(s) appear in the title of the page

If you are looking for results from a particular kind of web site, try limiting your search to a type of domain:

  • .org -- sites owned by organizations, such as non-profits or associations
  • .edu -- sites owned by educational institutions. But be careful of sites with ~name after the main part of the URL (e.g. http://www.univ.edu/~smith) because they could be put out by anyone with a university account, including students.
  • .gov -- government web sites
  • .mil -- military web sites

Or limit to a specific domain: e.g. www.georgia.gov will only return results from pages on the State of Georgia's server, with URLs beginning www.georgia.gov
