- Communication & Mass Media Complete is an index to literature relating to communication and mass media studies, including some full text. The database is the result of the merging of two popular databases in the fields of communication and mass media studies - CommSearch, formerly produced by the National Communication Association (NCA), and Mass Media Articles Index, formerly produced by Penn State University. In addition to the content of these two databases, CMMC offers full text for over 160 major communication and mass media journals that were not previously covered by CommSearch or Mass Media Articles Index. In total, more than 285 journals will be indexed and abstracted in their entirety in CMMI, while approximately 100 more journals will be indexed selectively.

- Georgia Historic Newspapers

Online Access: On/Off CampusAn ongoing project to digitize Georgia newspapers.

- The Georgia Historic Newspaper Database is an outgrowth of the Georgia Newspaper Project managed by the University of Georgia Libraries. Since the early 1950s the UGA Libraries have made a systematic effort to identify and obtain copies of every newspaper ever published in Georgia and to preserve these valuable historical resources on microfilm. To date over 15 million pages of newsprint have been microfilmed, including at least one newspaper from every county in Georgia that published a newspaper. The Georgia Newspaper Project is part of the U.S. Newspaper Project and has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Microfilm remains the best format for preservation, and microfilming of Georgia newspapers will continue for the foreseeable future. Digital technology, however, offers many advantages for access. In a digital environment newspapers can be viewed from remote locations by multiple users, and the newspaper texts can be searchable. The goal of the Georgia Historic Newspaper Database is to convert every Georgia newspaper to digital format and to make this resource available free of charge as a searchable text database in GALILEO. For further information on the Georgia Newspaper project and information on purchasing newspapers on microfilm, visit their web site at www.libs.uga.edu/darchive/aboutgnp.html
Searchable text files of Georgia newspapers are generated in two ways. Whenever possible, scanned images of microfilmed newspaper pages are run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. This results in a full-text file in which every word is searchable. For older newspapers whose microfilmed images are of poorer quality, OCR is not effective, but selected portions of these newspapers have been transcribed by hand to allow somewhat more limited searching. At least two paragraphs of all articles containing local or state news as well as the basic content of advertisements have been included in the transcriptions. For articles whose content does not deal with Georgia, only the headlines have been transcribed. All newspaper texts, whether generated through OCR or by human transcription, are marked up in Standard Generalzed Markup Language (SGML) to permit more sophisticated searching (e.g., limiting a search to a specific newspaper issue, article, or headline.) Although not every word of every newspaper is searchable, every word is available for viewing. Each page of digitized newsprint can be viewed as an electronic facsimile of the original, including all advertisements and illustrations.
