- The American State Papers include approximately 6280 numbered publications, largely Congressional but also Executive Department materials, covering the areas of foreign relations, Indian affairs, finance, commerce and navigation, military affairs, naval affairs, the post-office department, public lands, and claims. Unlike the U.S. Congressional Serial Set, the publications in the American State Papers are not divided into reports and documents and do not include House and Senate journals. Approximately two-thirds of the publications cover the first 14 Congresses (1789-1817), whereas the remaining third chronologically overlap with the Serial Set from 1817-1838.

- ArchivesUSA is a unique database for scholars and researchers. It provides location information for primary source materials. The database integrates three major information resources:
- A newly compiled directory of manuscript repositories, giving full addresses, including e-mail and URLs, opening hours, and details of holdings and areas of special interest. This directory updates and supersedes the Directory of Archives and Manuscript Repositories in the United States (DAMRUS) last published in 1988.
- Collection records from the National Union Catalogue of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC). Information gathered and compiled by the Library of Congress (LC)from the 1950s through the end of 1997, covering some 76,000 collections. Each record also includes the LC's subject and name indexing of the collection.
- Names and detailed subject indexing of over 44,000 collections whose finding aids have been published separately in the major microfiche series, National Inventory of Documentary Sources in the United States (NIDS).
The NUCMC and NIDS information has been integrated to provide a single record for each collection, with detailed information drawn from both resources when available. The first installment of a growing body of collection records submitted directly to ArchivesUSA has also been included.

During much of the 19th century, especially in the pre-Civil War era, the Serial Set also included key Executive Department publications that were published only or primarily in the U.S. Congressional Serial Set.
