Internet Explorer Users: cookies must be set to medium for this database to function properly. This resource provides a conceptual foundation and the tools covering the field of Geographic Information Science and Systems.

- Key Features of the Encyclopedia of Geographic Information Science include bringing together GIS literature from across the academic spectrum, the key foundations of GIS, and the vocabulary of the field.
Key Themes include: Conceptual Foundations, Cartography and Visualization, Design Aspects, Data Manipulation, Data Modeling, Geocomputation, Geospatial Data, Societal Issues, Spatial Analysis, and Organizational and Institutional Aspects.
In general, there are four kinds of entries, differentiated by their length. Long entries define the domain of GISci and its major subdomains, such as cartography and geodesy, and reflect on core themes, such as spatial analysis, ontology, and data modeling. Medium-length entries address significant topics, such as network analysis, spatialization, and polygon operations. Short entries summarize relatively specialized concepts and techniques, such as the ecological fallacy, spatial weights, and open standards. Very short entries offer brief descriptions of some of the key organizations in GIS and definitions of fundamental topics, such as legend and extent.
Following most entries, a Further Readings section is included containing references to seminal works by scientists and/or others mentioned in the entries.
