Getting References
RefWorks
supports a variety of methods to transfer references from databases
into your RefWorks folders, or to create references manually:
- Z39.50
connection file search
- manual
input (not included in this tutorial)
- direct
export from a database
- import
from a text-based file of saved references
The
connection file method links out to a catalog (e.g. GIL@UGA)
or to PubMed. The connection file is a Z39.50 standard search
interface designed to interact seamlessly with numerous library
catalogs and PubMed, another name for the popular MEDLINE.
The connections are initiated within RefWorks, rather than
a separate browser window. You simply type the search elements
of the field (title, author, etc.) to execute a search.
The
manual input (no demonstration at this time) requires you to
type each field's data (title, authors,
etc.) into an empty record. Both
the connection transfer method and the manual keying of data
begin in RefWorks.
By
contrast, direct export or import, begin in individual databases
in GALILEO®.
References pass from the databases to your RefWorks account
via export or saved
references in a mostly error-free fashion. Be aware
that occasional errors may occur using any of these automated
transfer methods. Review the references you put into your RefWorks
databases for completeness and clarity regardless of the input
method you use.
