UNIV1120
Creative Research Assignment - Making a Documentary
This assignment is designed to help you find, evaluate, and interpret information from a variety of scholarly and popular sources using the UGA Libraries’ databases and the Internet.
For this assignment you will make a very short documentary on a topic of your choice, using Apple's iMovie or Microsoft's Movie Maker software. You will also create a website related to the topic that will provide a space to "publish" your documentary. You will be asked to find, evaluate, and interpret a variety of scholarly and popular sources for the content of your documentary and website, compile an annotated bibliography of those sources, and provide a written script. You will use the information you have found to create your own documentary on your topic. By the end of this assignment, you will have learned:
- How to create a workable research query
- How to search GIL (the UGA Libraries’ online catalog), Academic Search Premier (article database covering scholarly, popular and news articles), and LexisNexis (newspaper articles) to find research sources
- How to use the Web more efficiently to find reliable sources for your academic projects
- How to read and summarize key points in resources
- How to correctly cite your sources and avoid plagiarism
- How to use iMovie on a Mac platform or Movie Maker on a PC platform to create your own documentary employing images, sound and text
- How to create a website using HTML coding language, images, and external/internal links
