BOOKS and REFERENCE SOURCES

GIL: UGA Libraries' Online Catalog - Search GIL to find books, VHS/DVDs, rare books & manuscripts.

How to set up a Keyword Search

1. Go to the Libraries' homepage and click on GIL Catalog.

2. Choose a Keyword Search in GIL. Enter your keywords into the search boxes and click Search.

3. The result list will show you items that match your keywords.

4. Choose a title from the list and click on it to find more information about the book. The full record will show you the citation at the top, subject headings (use these for other keyword ideas), location of the book (which library, what floor, what call number and if it is checked out).

Tip: If the location is listed as Repository, you can recall the book within 24 hours by visiting the Circulation desk or by filling out the Repository Request form at http://www.libs.uga.edu/maincirc/onlineforms/repository.html

5. Write down or print out the location of the book you have chosen. Use the library and call number to find the book.

Keywords and Subject Headings

Subject headings are a way to link to other items about the same topic - like a "More Like This" link. Some subject headings you may use for this assignment include:

  • Anthropology plus a cultural group or region (e.g. Anthropology and Africa)
  • Ethnology or Ethnic Groups
  • Anthropology, Field Work
  • Anthropology plus an aspect of culture (e.g. Anthropology and Dance)
  • Subsets of Ethnology include: Ethnomusicology, Folklore, Manners and Customs, Ethnophilospohy

You can also use a particular issue as a keyword combined with a region (i.e. Folklore and China)

Combine these with an ethnic group or region to find sources. Like this:

Helpful Hint: Once you find a book on your subject, mine the bibliography for more sources to look up and add to your bibliography just as you would with journal articles.
