The Circulation/Reserves Desk Assistant is responsible to the Public Services/Reserves Coordinator for performing public service duties and a variety of clerical routines in order to maintain the integrity of the Libraries' collection. The Assistant serves library patrons in accessing the collection by attending a public service desk, processing materials, and by maintaining accurate records. The Assistant also performs specialized circulation services at the Circulation Office desk and over the phone, including removing student registration flags, issuing borrowers' cards, and interpreting policies, rules, and regulations. Work is performed under general supervision following established practices and procedures. Work at a computer terminal is required. Ability to perform repetitive tasks while sitting or standing at work-stations is required. Some night and weekend work is required.
Creates reserve lists using GIL and eLC by corresponding with instructors, retrieving requested materials, creating temporary bibliographic records for personal items and digitizing portions of materials.
Assists patrons at the Circulation Desk with specialized access services by circulating materials, updating online records, collecting fines, providing information on the status of items in the collection, and searching for items.
Maintains course reserve lists using GIL and eLC by reconciling new lists, removing materials at the end of term, returning removed materials to instructors and/or permanent locations, and performing inventory of the reserves shelves.
Works in n the Circulation Office performing specialized circulation services by issuing borrowers' cards, placing and clearing student registration flags, answering inquiries concerning library obligations and access to library electronic resources, and by interpreting policies, rules, and regulations independently at the Circulation Office desk and phones.
Assists in the operation of the Libraries' resource sharing programs including GIL Express by searching, retrieving and processing materials requested by UGA patrons and USG patrons, and instructing UGA patrons in the use of resource sharing programs.
Provides routine information and direction pertaining to Libraries policy by greeting patrons, assisting them with questions and directing them to appropriate Departments.
Maintains flexibility in the Department and organization by assuming other similar responsibilities as assigned, and facilitates work flow by offering services to other staff when appropriate and with the permission of the immediate supervisor.
Oversees the public service desks on assigned evenings or weekends by supervising student assistants performing general circulation duties and managing unusual problems as they arise.
Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE, Library Update, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
One year of college education AND one year library or related clerical/customer service experience; OR two years library or related clerical/customer service experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons;
Ability to perform clerical tasks accurately with close attention to detail;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
Effective oral and written communication skills;
Experience processing cash receipts, checks and credit cards
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment preferred; Knowledge of word processing and web publishing software preferred (i.e. Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat, etc.)
Salary Range: $24,000
