"POV: Mai’s America"
Wednesday, March 3, 2004 - 7:00 p.m.
Student Learning Center, Room 171

A spunky Vietnamese teenager named Mai gets the chance of a lifetime—to study in the United States. Expecting Hollywood, she instead lands in rural Mississippi, a crazy quilt of self-proclaimed rednecks, cliquish teenagers, South Vietnamese exiles and transvestite soul mates.

(72 min. Originally broadcast on PBS on August 6, 2002. Peabody Awards entry number: 2002268 DCT.)
A discussion follows the film.

"True Life: I'm Coming Out"
Tuesday, March 16, 2004 - 7:00 p.m.
Student Learning Center, Room 171

Expressing one’s homosexuality to the outside world can at best be a liberating experience, and at worst a humiliating one. MTV’s True Life: I’m Coming Out explores this transcendent time in the lives of a handful of young people as they gather the courage to come out to their family and friends.

(44 min. Originally broadcast on MTV on June 27, 2001. Peabody Awards entry number: 2002125 DCT.) Discussion with members of Lambda Alliance after the film.

"Fire"
Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 12:10 p.m.
River’s Crossing, Room 135

Organized protests, censorship and violent riots greeted the Indian exhibition of Deepa Mehta’s film about two sisters-in-law trapped in loveless marriages. Although popularly characterized as the first Indian film to depict a lesbian relationship, Fire is more substantially an examination of New Delhi's growing middle class, and the tensions that arise when individual desires and the need for self-fulfillment run counter to traditional values.

(105 min. 1996. VHS 2999.1.) Sponsored by Adult Education, College of Education’s Dean’s Council on Diversity, and the UGA Lifelong Learning Association.

"Return Of Sarah's Daughters"
Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 7:00 p.m.
Student Learning Center, Room 147

A compelling personal documentary about secular women drawn to Jewish Orthodoxy. Rus, a no-nonsense social worker, discovers fulfillment in the Hasidic community. Myriam, a spiritually-oriented lesbian, struggles to fit in, but ultimately leaves to become a rabbi. Their stories challenge the filmmaker to give more than a feminist tour of this closed world. She must confront her own lack of ethnic identity. What does tradition have to offer? At what price? Ultimately, her journey illuminates the conflict between assimilation and tradition, community and individualism.

(56 min. 1997. VHS 3555.1.)
Sponsored by UGA Hillel: Campus Center for Jewish Life.

"Married In America"
Wedneday, March 24, 2004 - 7:00 p.m.
Student Learning Center, Room 171

This first film in a series by Michael Apted shows what brought couples together; why they are making a lifetime commitment; and their hopes and dreams for the future. The filmmaker decided to show interfaith, bi-racial, and same-sex marriage, one second-marriage with children, as well as partnerships in which the woman is likely to earn significantly more than her male partner.

(120 min. Originally broadcast on A&E on June 20, 2002. Peabody Awards entry number: 2002137 DCT) Discussion following the film.
