This drama, which won a 1986 Peabody Award, shows how the prejudice and injustice Martin Luther King, Jr. experienced as a child shaped him into a man who stood for freedom and equality for all. Being separated from one of his best friends and not being served in stores profoundly affects the young "M.L." King (Fred Perrin). As a teenager, "M.L." (Walter Franks) copes with the loss of his beloved grandmother (Georgia Allen), and the bigotry displayed in various ways by the white establishment.

Today, Angola 's AIDS rate is the lowest in Southern Africa, hovering just at the disease's tipping point, about 5%, compared with 22% in neighboring countries like Namibia and Zambia.  But the recent disarmament of the UNITA rebel army means that regional transportation and travel are increasing, bearing the AIDS pandemic with them.  This episode of WIDE ANGLE tracks the Angolan army -- the only functioning arm of the state -- as they mobilize to avert a disastrous health crisis. Can their efforts control the spread of the epidemic?

"Warming By the Devil's Fire"

warming by the devil's fire

Originally broadcast on PBS in 2003 as part of Martin Scorsese's The Blues.
90 minutes.
PG-13.
Peabody entry number: 2003212 DCT.

Award-winning director Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep, My Brother's Wedding, To Sleep with Anger) presents a tale about a young boy's encounter with his family in Mississippi in the 1950s, where Gospel music and the Blues put generations at odds. Says Burnett: "The sound of the blues was a part of my environment that I took for granted. However, as years passed, the blues slowly emerged as an essential source of imagery, humor, irony, and insight that allows one to reflect on the human condition. I always wanted to do a story on the blues that not only reflected its nature and its content, but also alludes to the form itself. In short, a story that gives you the impression of the blues."

"Tyson"

Originally broadcast Fox Sports Net in 2003.
96 minutes.
Not rated. Contains adult themes.
Peabody entry number: 2003187 DCT.

In a series of 4 interviews conducted over a 7-month period in 2003, Tyson told his own story in a definitive manner for the first time. These historic interviews formed the backbone of this 96-minute documentary as this reform school hellion, who was saved, if only temporarily, from a life of crime and punishment, escorts us through his dark and tumultuous existence as he prepares to assume his destiny as Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World. In this hip and stylish exploration of the troubled life and dazzling career of the boxing champion, these rare and compelling interviews with Tyson himself are combined with candid reflections from those who know him, never-before-seen footage and an edgy and probing narrative to create a riveting and unforgettable story.
