September 21

Chavez: Inside the Coup. (Peabody Winner - 2003150 DCT)
A documentary by ZDF German TV and the Irish Film Board about the 48 hour coup in 2002 against Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. (65 minutes) (This documentary is also known as The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.)

Discussants: Dr. Carolina Acosta-Alzuru (Grady College) and Dr. José Alvarez (Romance Languages).



September 28

Greener Grass: Cuba, Baseball and the United States. (Peabody 2000135 DCT)

This film about the 1999 exhibition series between the Baltimore Orioles and the Cuban National Team documents how baseball can be both a bridge and barrier between the two countries. (57 minutes)

Discussant: Marc Petrini (Romance Languages).



October 5

Heatwave. 2 episodes: Paquito D'Rivera (Peabody 84001 ENT) and Mongo Santamaría (Peabody 84002 ENT).

A jazz series by Boston PBS station WGBH. These two episodes feature Cuban jazz musicians Paquito D'Rivera (saxophonist and clarinetist) and Mongo Santamaría (conguero). (each episode is 30 minutes)

October 12

Manuela Sáenz: la libertadora del libertador. (DVD 269.1)

A whaling ship carrying Herman Melville arrives in Perú, where he finds Manuela Sáenz, the former mistress of Símon Bolívar. Her life story enfolds as she rereads letters from Bolívar which recount her life as a colonel in his movement to unite South America into one nation. (97 minutes)

Discussant: Leonardo Padrón, the film's screenwriter.
