Searching for Peabody Collection programs in GIL

All Peabody Collection television programs from 1949-1958, 1978-81, and 1988, and most African-American History and Culture television programs from 1959-1996, are cataloged in GIL, the University of Georgia Libraries online catalog.  These records were created using national standards for Archival Moving Image Cataloging and are fully integrated within the catalog.  Most records contain extensive name, subject, and genre access.  The records from 1978-81 and 1988 are less detailed.

Recommendations and Caveats

You may find it helpful to print a copy of these tips, or to open a second window to conduct your GIL search, so that you can refer back to these tips and examples as needed.

Because of the logic governing the organization of information within the records and the restrictions on searching inherent to the GIL system, it is best to employ a variety of search strategies.  The system which supports the creation of these records sets a limit on record length.  For this reason, it was not possible to add specific author and subject headings for all persons and topics associated with the program.  A general keyword search will retrieve information from several descriptive notes where such names and subject references might be found.

The KEYWORD search is recommended as the more reliable option.  This option features drop-down boxes to help you direct your search.

Using the "videorecording" option to limit your search will cause the titles in the Collection that are on 16mm film (most entries through 1970) to be excluded from the search.

Using the Corporate Author search will often cause your search to fail.  Corporate authors such as television stations and networks, production companies, and musical groups, may be found using the Author Name or Keyword Anywhere searches.

The Sort Results features are not reliable for large lists.  Generally, this function works better in the KEYWORD search than in the QUICK search.
