The African-American History and Culture Television Collection
is a subset of the Peabody Awards Collection, which is part of the University
of Georgia Libraries Media Archives.
The Peabody Awards Collection holds over 40,000 titles, with radio programs
dating from 1940 and television from 1948. Of these titles, over 1,600
television and over 800 radio programs relating to African-American History
and Culture have been identified.
The Peabody Awards Collection contains most television and radio entries to the George Foster Peabody Award. Founded in 1940, the Peabody Award is administered by the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and is considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition of excellence in broadcasting and cable. The programs in the Peabody Awards Collection are thus a reflection of the best in American broadcasting history. The contents of the Peabody Awards Collection are determined by the individuals, stations, and networks that have entered these programs and series for Peabody Awards consideration.
1,100 of the African-American History and Culture television programs in the Peabody Awards Collection have been cataloged and preserved as part of a project funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
