Checkers Speech - A speech in which Richard Nixon denied charges that he had accepted money from a secret political fund. Nixon gave a televised address reporting that the only gift he accepted was the family cocker spaniel, Checkers, who had been sent by a Texas admirer. Dempsey - Carpentier Fight - Jack Dempsey beat Georges Carpentier in less than 11 minutes in a boxing match on July 2, 1921. German Invasion of Russia - Adolph Hitler ordered the invasion of Russia in 1941. This act, which violated a nonaggression pact signed in 1939, took the Soviets by surprise and, therefore, allowed the Germans to capture many Russian armies. Hollywood Ten - Consisted of Herbert Biberman, Lester Cole, Albert Maltz, Adrian Scott, Samuel Ornitz, Dalton Trumbo, Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner, Jr., John Howard Lawson, and Alvah Bessie. The House Un-American Activities Committee found these ten men guilty of contempt of congress because they refused to answer questions pertaining to their possible communist affiliations. Each was sentenced to between six and twelve months in prison. After their sentences were carried out, most were blacklisted by the Hollywood studios.

Southern Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, (1942 - 1943) - At this island during WWII, Japanese troops landed and began building an airfield. In response, the Allies conducted a surprise attack on the airfield and captured it. Both sides then began landing reinforcements by sea, and intense fighting began. The Japanese were unable to overwhelm the Americans because the Americans were able to land troops faster than could the Japanese. As a result of this, the Japanese were forced to leave the island.

Taft-Hartley Taft-Hartley Act or Labor-management Relations Act, (1947) - This act, developed by Senator Robert A. Taft from Ohio and Representative Fred A. Hartley, Jr. from New Jersey, sought to preserve the rights of workers to organize and to bargain collectively and to guarantee employees the right not to join unions. This Act also permitted union shops only where state law allowed and where a majority of workers voted for them, required unions to give 60 days advance notification of a strike, clearly defined unfair labor practices and unfair union practices, and required union officers to deny under oath any Communist affiliations.
