Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is the difference between the Media Department and the Media Archives?

The Media Department and the Media Archives currently occupy the same location on the 7th floor of the Main Library. The Media Department holds the collection of commercially distributed audio and visual materials (sound recordings, videos, DVDs, laserdiscs, etc.). The Media Archives holds original archival audio and visual collections (including the Peabody Awards entries, the Georgia Folklore Collection, the Richard Nixon/Frank Gannon interviews, among others).

The collections in the Media Archives are accessed through the Media Department.

  • Is Media Archives open to the public, or just UGA students and faculty?

The Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection may be used by anyone who can provide a valid U.S. drivers license, or UGA ID.

No unsupervised persons under the age of 17 may use the Media Department facilities or Media Archives materials. We welcome young scholars, but they must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Can I check out videos from the Media Archives, or must I view them within the department?

Our materials are considered a reference collection, and as such, do not circulate or go out on Interlibrary Loan. For class showings, we have a screening room which seats up to 45 patrons, as well as a smaller seminar room, which seats up to 20 patrons.  Within the department, we have an ample number of viewing and listening stations available for individuals, or groups of two, so the material is readily accessible.

We do make exceptions when a faculty member or teaching staff has an exceptionally large class, or if other conflicts arise in regard to our viewing rooms.  In those cases, we allow videos, DVDs, and laserdiscs to be borrowed by faculty members, teaching staff, or graduate students with a current faculty permission form to be used on campus for class showings.  For specific details see the Faculty and Graduate Students Policies

We have also made special provisions for grades K-12 teachers who want to use materials from the Peabody Awards Collection only. See Policies for Teachers (K-12) for more details.

  • Can I arrange for copies of material in the Media Archives?

Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot provide copies of any commercially obtained material.  However, material from the Peabody Awards Collection and other archival collections can be obtained for a fee, providing that the patron has obtained written permission from the copyright holder for a given production.

See the descriptions of the individual collections held in the Media Archives for more information about copyright availability.  For more information about the cost of licensing footage see the licensing fee schedule
