U.S. Government Documents

About the collection

As Georgia's regional depository for U.S. government documents, the University of Georgia Libraries receives and permanently retains publications in all formats made available through the Federal Depository Library Program administered by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). Most documents of the executive, judicial, and legislative branches are included in this program. The Map and Government Information Library also maintains a collection of non-depository publications dating back to 1953.

Locations of documents at UGA

U.S. government documents are housed in the Map and Government Information Library, the Science Library, and the off-site Repository. Most U.S. documents are shelved according to the Superintendent of Documents (Sudoc) Classification System. The prefix J84 is added to this number to complete the call number used in this collection (i.e. J84: D 101.2:AC 2/5). U.S. documents can be searched by Sudoc number in GIL; however, the J84 prefix should not be included when performing a search by Sudoc number (i.e. search for D 101.2:AC 2/5 not J84: D 101.2:AC 2/5).

Access

Many U.S. Government Documents can be located through GIL, the Libraries' online catalog; however, please be advised that most items published prior to 1976 do not yet have records in GIL. Additional access to U.S. documents and catalog records is provided by GPO's Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (GALILEO Password required for off-campus access), and WorldCat (GALILEO Password required for off-campus access). If you have a question about whether the Libraries own a specific document please contact the Map and Government Information Library for assistance.
