Summer Ice Cream Social
May
22's ice cream social was a bona fide hit on a hot summer day.
LSA board members were the designated scoopers at the event. Library
staff enjoyed each other's company and cooled off by eating
Ben and Jerry's ice cream, sorbet, and Tofutti with all the toppings.
GV903s
Rock Kingpins Bowling
The
Libraries' bowling team, the GV903s, blew away the competition and
won second place in Kingpins Bowling's Summer / Fall league. Please
congratulate the team members: Ed Hatfield, MacKenzie
Haring, Kristy Dixon, Erin
Appel, Michael Hervey, Byron Smith (the team's highest scorer),
Ian Darken, and Julie Dyles.
Big
Read Arrives in Athens
Athens'
Big Read, part of the NEA initiative to promote literacy, celebrated
Rudolfo Anaya's novel Bless Me, Ultima. Festivities
kicked off with September 13's Fiesta at the Lyndon House and
culminated in October
26's lecture at the Athens-Clarke County Library by Margarite
Fernandez Olmos. There were many well-attended events, including
a reading by UGA author Judith Ortiz Cofer, an owl encounter
at the Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail, and a Symbols of Mexico family
day at the Georgia Museum of Art.
The program
originated in the Libraries Staff Association and quickly grew
to a collaboration between the UGA Libraries,
Georgia Museum of Art, and the Athens-Clarke
County Public Library. LSA donated $100
toward the effort and sponsored a staff
book discussion. Special thanks to Big
Read coordinators Diana Hartle, Chandra
Jackson, and Emily Luken, as well as
all library staff who participated!
Fundraising
and Outreach Update
June's
animal welfare drive benefited the Athens
Area Humane Society, UGA
Campus Cats, Athens-Clarke
County Animal Control, and Madison-Oglethorpe
County Animal Shelter. You donated everything from dog food to pet vitamins
to support our furry friends.
In August and September, the Libraries Staff Association held both a bake sale
and a school supply drive. The bake sale raised $257.06.
We used $85 from the bake sale proceeds to sponsor a child in the Athens
Youth Organization. The supply
drive garnered paper, crayons, glue, and other classroom supplies for the Athens
Tutorial Program.
We raised $527.79 at our
biannual book and bake sale on October 23. LSA donated
$410.43 to the Loran
Smith Center for Cancer Support in memory of one of our own, Betty Fox.
Thanks to all
who donated, baked, sold, and bought this fall! We appreciate your support
of the Libraries Staff Association and the Athens community. |
