News & Activities
The annual supply drive to benefit the Athens Tutorial Program is now underway. There is a collection box in each department which includes a wish list. To find out more about the program go to their website at http://www.uga.edu/~atp/. If you have any questions, please contact Hannah Richmond at hannahlr@uga.edu
The kickoff event for the Big Read is coming up on Saturday September 13, 2008 beginning at 11:00 am at the Lyndon House Arts Center. If you are interested in volunteering at this event, contact Diana Hartle (dhartle@uga.edu).
The Big Read is a program sponsored by the UGA Libraries in partnership with the Georgia Museum of Art, the Athens-Clarke County Public Library, and the Lyndon House Arts Center. These entities have received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for The Big Read. This initiative is designed to encourage reading and stimulate conversation about a chosen book within the community. Athens will be focusing on the coming of age novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya. Bless Me, Ultima is the tale of Antonio Marez, a young Mexican-American boy living in New Mexico who is torn between conflicting ideologies of his family, his culture, and his own mind.
Programming for The Big Read is scheduled from September 13, 2008 to October 26, 2008 surrounding the themes and symbols of the novel. Following is a blurb about the kickoff event that you can share with your friends:
¡Fiesta! is the community-wide kick-off event for The Big Read. The day's activities include a musical performance by Incatepec, games, and a pottery making demonstration by local Hispanic women's group. In the children's studio, families will use fabric, paper, and feathers to create owl collages based on the owl from the community's chosen book Bless Me, Ultima. There will also be the option to cut shapes out of tissue paper to create beautiful Papel Picado decorations. County Commissioner Alice Kinman and other dignitaries will be present to promote the Big Read and proclaim the day "Big Read Day in Athens." Refreshments by Cali n' Tito's and copies of the book, Bless Me, Ultima will be distributed.
LSA raised $257.06 at the last bake sale, a portion of which will go to the Athens Youth Organization to sponsor a child for this football season. We'd like to thank all the people who bought, baked and helped to sell the goodies.
A big thank you to all who contributed to the annual LSA Animal Welfare Drive. The drive is officially over, however, we will soon be posting information about items collected.
