UGA Libraries well-represented in spelling spectacle

(l to r.) Jean, Sheila, Diane

The Spirited Spell-off Spectacle on Sept. 25 went from Spelling Bee to Family Feud when the bragging rights came down to two teams from the UGA Libraries.

The Yellow Dog Spellers (Jean Cleveland, Sheila Devaney and Diane Trap), were the last ones standing from a field of 11 teams. The team of Mary Miller, Monica Pereira and Robert Rhudy (spelling under PE1625, the LC category for dictionaries) misspelled "solecism" (mishearing it as "solipsism"), The Yellow Dogs then correctly spelled "suffrutescent" to capture the title.

The Spelling Bee was a fundraiser for the Athens-Clarke Literacy Council and was well-supported by UGA librarians. In addition to the Yellow Dogs and PE1625, reference librarians Patrick Reidenbaugh and Amy Watts were joined by Aisling Metcalfe for the Spelltastics and Anne Burnett, Kathy Caveney and Lauren Knowlton (sister of Thomas Knowlton in the SLC) of the law library competed as the "lawliBees." The New Georgia Encyclopedia, housed in and claimed by the Main Library, fielded a team with Kate Howard, Elisabeth Hughes and Jane Kobres (of UGA Press, spouse of our Bob).

The UGA library teams bested participants from the UGA English department, the Clarke County school district, the regional library, Athens Tech, the Catholic Center and the Athens Banner Herald.

The Literacy Council took home more than $5,700 in donations that will be used to buy basic teaching supplies for Athens' network of adult literacy and English as a Second Language programs, said Sarah McKee, an editor with the New Georgia Encyclopedia, who organized the event.

Libraries HR changes

Several small processes are being discontinued by the Libraries HR department in an effort to streamline their work.

1) The Stulibs listserv, a list that HR had developed as a communications tool for student assistants, has been discontinued.

2) New hires meet with Becky on the morning of their first day; additionally supervisors should help them through the online orientation on their first day; UGA HR offers a benefits workshop for all new hires on the first and third Monday of the month - new staff should be encouraged to attend this.

3) Because the dates for the monthly and six-month evaluations are included on the supervisors hiring checklist that Becky sends to each supervisor of a new hire, she will no longer send out the monthly performance appraisal reminders

4) All vacancies appear in the Library Update and staff now know how to access the Libraries HR page to see vacancies http://www.libs.uga.edu/humres/jobs/index.html , notes alerting staff to new vacancies will not be sent on grapevine.

These changes will be evaluated and modified if necessary.
