Direct Export from GALILEO with Mac Browsers
Nifty Short Cut -- Try it with OS X
Before you configure your browser with helper applications as described farther down on this page, please see if a short cut for Export works for you:
- In the GALILEO database, Export your search results.
- Download Manager should kick in and place the file with your results on your desktop.
- Locate the file on your desktop and Drag it to Endnote application in the dock.
- A directory will appear from which you should locate the Library into which you want the results to transfer. Note: do not drag the results directly into your library but rather be sure to drag them into the Endnote application.
- Select your Endnote library from the directory and watch your results magically appear!
- Exception: JSTOR uses the term Export but the transfer from JSTOR is really a Save as a .txt file and import with JSTOR filter
If for some reason the above short cut doesn't work, you can create special configuration files which will enable Endnote to process these files.
| Firefox | Internet Explorer | Netscape | Safari |
Here are strategies for tweaking Firefox, Safari, Netscape 7.2 and Internet Explorer 5 for Macs to accommodate this nifty transfer from Web of Science, the EBSCO databases, and the OCLC FirstSearch databases! (ScienceDirect Export will work without browser tweaking.)
You need to configure helpers in your browsers, one for Web of Science, another for EBSCO databases, and another for OCLC FirstSearch databases so your browser will know what to do with these different file types. But you only have to do it once for each file type and thereafter you can easily transfer references via Direct Export from those databases.
The screen captures below give a general idea of how the configuration process flows in each browser. I have bolded the action required or the text you need to type since not everything is visible in the captures.
The captures for Firefox and Safari are not as detailed as I would like, but I've been too busy to get back to the OISD Mac. I will improve those sections with more captures soon.
NOTE: After you have configured the helper files for your preferred browser, see step-by-step instructions for the Export process in various databases...yes they differ from one aggregator to another.

Firefox for Mac
To configure helper applications in this browser, you will download sample references from the GALILEO database (see instructions) and the first time you add them to your Endnote library, Firefox will ask you how to process them and *important* if you want to process like files similarly.
You set the helper process once for each file type, and thereafter Firefox will know what to do with the file types from that information supplier in the future. Right now you can set up the helpers for Web of Science, the EBSCO databases (such as PsycINFO, ERIC, MLA, EconLIT, AGRICOLA, and many more) and OCLC FirstSearch databases (ERIC and WorldCat)
In the example below I searched Web of Science and created a Marked List of references. I clicked the Marked List tab, checked Abstract and Keyword in step 1, and clicked Export to Reference Software button in step 2. Export will download the references on your desktop (at least that's where they appeared on the OISD Mac).
Double click the file on your desktop and you'll see the following dialog box.
In "Open with" option click Choose. Point to the Endnote application when the Choose Helper Application window appears and click Open.

Check the box "Do this automatically for files like this from now on"
Click OK to confirm the helper setting.
Open an Endnote library will popup and you can deposit the Web of Sciences references into the library you select.

For a different file type, search an EBSCO database in GALILEO, and add references to the folder. When folder is full (maximum 100) or you have added all the references of interest, click Folder has items, then Save to disk and Bibliographic Manager tab. Bullet Export citations into Endnote option and click Save.
Your Download manager will place the file on your desktop.
Process as above so the next time you Export from an EBSCO database you'll proceed directly to open an Endnote library.
Safari
Start by downloading some references from Web of Science and an EBSCO database to your desktop (see instructions) as you'll want to select a file to start the configuration process.
Set configurations with Mac Finder (note: the configs are set in Finder, not in Safari itself)
Select (click once) Exported/downloaded file on desktop.
- Click File/Get Info in Finder Options
- Type identifying phrase into Comments: for example Endnote and EBSCO databases Direct Export
- Click arrow beside Open With and choose Endnote (see second capture and comments)
- Click Change All to apply this file type to this process.
- Click OK.

In the Choose other application window you may need to click down arrow beside Enable so it will read All Applications. Then you can select Endnote.
Check Always Open With (I forgot to get a capture showing that checked!!) and click Add.

Then you'll be asked into which library to deposit the references and zip, there they'll go!

Note about Exporting in FirstSearch databases - Unlike Web of Science and EBSCO which will only ask you to which Endnote library to send your references, FirstSearch databases will have an additional step. The Export process will ask you to Choose a Filter and will automatically open the Filters window for you to make your choice. Choose the "Name of database" from Info Provider OCLC FirstSearch filter (example ERIC OCLC FirstSearch -- not ERIC OVID or ERIC Silverplatter). See step-by-step instructions for more information.
