Spring 2005 News

Site License

Endnote is now available for downloading to the UGA community.

A major patch for Endnote 8 for Windows was issued in February and Endnote 8.02 for Windows is now on the library server. If you previously downloaded 8.01, you can visit the Endnote website to download the patch.

Versions for Windows and Macintosh are ready for
downloading at the libraries gateway

Follow the linking pages to authenticate and install Endnote.

Please read the specific features of the versions carefully so you can
choose the one which best suits your needs.

After you've installed Endnote, remember to check that the Endnote toolbar has associated correctly with your word processor.

If you don't see Endnote as an option after clicking View/Toolbars, here are specific instructions for copying the two necessary files into your Word startup folder.

Issues with Endnote 8.0.2

For Endnote 8.0.2 continuing bugs and workarounds, please visit John East's excellent webpage for Endnote support

Perhaps the most important advice he gives is to update the RefMan RIS filter by adding Edit/ImportFilters/RefManRIS/ click Edit Button; in Template add AB - in the Tag column (there are two spaces before the hyphen) and add Abstract to the Endnote Field column. Then click File/Save.

Other bugs and workarounds he mentions are:

The Link to PDF field does not work. Links to PDF files must be inserted in the URL field, as in previous versions.

The Paste with text styles command does not work. If text is pasted into a reference window in EndNote, italics and other text styles are lost.

If you have used the Preferences to change the location of your Styles folder, you will not be able to edit any of the styles in that folder.

When using the Change Text command, EndNote does not recognize Ctrl+Enter as a carriage return, as it did in previous versions.

Direct export from databases will not work properly if you have used the Preferences to change the location of your Filters folder.

Direct export from some databases will not include the abstract of the
article. This can be fixed by editing the templates of the filter called
RefMan RIS to insert an additional line:
AB - Abstract
Note that there are two spaces before the hyphen.

The Translated Author field is not set up as a "special field". EndNote does not recognize it as an author field. Output styles will not configure data in this field according to the Editor Lists and Editor Name settings, which normally govern all subsidiary author fields.

When using RTF Document Scan with a footnote style, the Cited Pages symbol @ will produce unmatched citations.

When writing or editing filters, the normal editing functions (Cut, Copy,
Paste) do not work.

Editing the Search Attributes of a connection file will corrupt the
connection file and render it unusable.

Connection files now have an option to import Unicode text in UTF-8 encoding. This only works with some Z39.50 servers. With other servers, all records which contain non-ASCII text are not imported. They can be retrieved from the Connect Log and filtered into EndNote using the connection file. Alternatively, the Connection Settings of the connection file can be edited to change the Text setting to ANSEL. In either case, non-ASCII text will be garbled.

ReferenceManager and Procite databases cannot be automatically converted to EndNote 8 format. Export the databases in ReferenceManager (RIS) format and import them into EndNote using the RefMan (RIS) filter.

BIOSIS Previews

The connection file is working again and will bring in as many matches to your search as you want; no more hanging on the twelth or thirteenth record!

ScienceDirect

Revise the RefMan RIS filter as described above so that the abstracts will be included in the Export of your search results.

EBSCO databases

PsycINFO, MLA, AGRICOLA, ERIC, EconLit and all other EBSCO databases continue to have a variety of problems with Direct Export into Endnote since last September and more are appearing! Since last fall "bundled" Exports have Generic reference type assigned to references 2-100 and Generic will not style correctly in APA and other popular writing styles. In Endnote 8, the Generic style issue occurs only in Academic Source Premier and Business Source Premier. But in Endnote 7 Generic is the reference type for all the EBSCO databases.

In addition, now EBSCO has begun doubling the records exported: one contains all the bibliographic information and the other is completely blank except for a URL. For these, I suggest you Sort your List by Title and all the blank Title records will sort first and you can delete these since they only contain URLs. Don't sort by Author because there might be a few legitimate blank authors for Anonymous (editorials, etc.)

Editorial comment: EBSCO needs to treat Endnoters better!
