Endnote X for Windows Now Available
Our site license for Endnote has once again been supported by the UGA Student Tech Fee special projects funding and Endnote 10 (or X as the company tags it) for Windows is now available for installation. The
Macintosh version of EN 10 should be available in late August.
This release looks solid so I recommend upgrading to it. Go to
www.libs.uga.edu/liaison/endnote/endnote2.html to read about some of
the new features and proceed through the steps to download the installer.
I did not uninstall Endnote 9 and still Endnote 10 effortlessly gathered all
my libraries, all my preferences previously set, and the EN10 toolbar is active in Word 2002.
However, it didn't carry over the custom styles I've created for some of you (also didn't copy custom connections and filters) but I still have them in EN9 so I will just copy/paste them over to my Styles/connections/filters folders in EN 10 (the filters and connections have the galileo prefix which makes them easy to find)
Another Endnote trainer who jumped from Endnote 7 to Endnote 10
had more "issues" so if you are currently using Endnote 7, save your libraries and any unique styles, filters, connections on another drive, UN-install Endnote 7 and then install Endnote 10. Your Endnote 7 library(ies) will have to be converted for viewing in Endnote 10, but that is automatic as you open the library -- you'll get a popup message saying conversion is required and you just click OK.
Unless you are in the midst of writing your dissertation or a book in
Endnote 7 or EN9 (in which case you may want to continue with your current version until that huge project is completed), I recommend that you upgrade to EN10 for Windows if your operating system and word processor permit. System requirements links are at www.libs.uga.edu/liaison/endnote/endnote2.html
Once you have Endnote 10 installed, open up the program, click Help in the toolbar, and click What's New in Endnote 10 to get links to information on the new features.
There are a number of small enhancements that streamline processes such as:
1. the link to .pdf fulltext now active from the front library list view
2. hiding empty fields in the records means much reduced scrolling
3. creating a compressed copy of your library and accompanying data file
4. a few new search options and a few more reference types
For those of you who have not yet implemented the FindItAtUGA process for locating fulltext from within Endnote, don't delay any longer!! Go to
Edit/Preferences in the toolbar (on a Mac go to Endnote/Preferences in the toolbar) and click OpenURL/PDF in EN10 (Mackers your EN9 version just says OpenURL).
1. Check Enable OpenURL box
2. Change Path to http://www.galileo.usg.edu/sfx_uga
3. Change Argument by deleting WOS (just those 3 letters) and inserting
endnote instead (right before the &)
Read the section on "Selecting a Relative Path or Absolute Path for link to PDF" in What's New in En 10 to decide which option you want to choose.
