4. Scroll to the right until you come to Unused boxes for Reference Types.

6. Click OK when you are finished.

7. Click Apply and OK as you exit Preferences area.

Now you've created Reference Types to store the bibliographic data for these types of publications.

Back in your Endnote library

As you add references to Endnote from scholarly databases which fall into these two categories, you change the Reference Type from plain Thesis to Thesis-UMI or from Journal Article to New Directions as appropriate.

In addition, you'll have to cut/paste some of the bibliographic information after you change the Reference Type as there are now different fields to accomodate the data.

To change journal article records into New Directions records

Typically New Directions is treated as a journal by scholarly databases. So when you see a Journal reference type with New Directions in Adult Education as the journal name, click reference type New Directions. This will provide new fields like Series, Book Title, Chapter Title.

Edit as follows:

  1. The Book Title which will export into the NOTES field prefaced by Theme: This text will have to be copy/pasted into the Book Title field manually.
  2. Editor's name is nowhere in the ERIC record. Get the Editor's name from the piece in your hand or from the UGA library book catalog.
  3. Don't worry that the city and publisher name doesn't appear in each ND record. That information will be added in the New Directions style!

To change regular thesis records into Thesis-UMI records

Thesis template accomodates two APA5 styles for dissertations. User must choose which entry matches the dissertation in hand and erase the other. One entry is for unpublished and one (with the UMI publication number) is for those available from UMI. Note: if the university has multiple campuses, UNC, UCalifornia, the City should be added to the institution . University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. And you'll have to type in the UMI publication number.

Now, your Endnote records are prepped so that APA5-Adult_Ed-uga will style your bibliography as your UGA Adult Education department requests.
