POSITION: Music Cataloging Assistant (Library Associate I)

JOB SUMMARY:
The Music Cataloging Associate is responsible to the Head, Music Cataloging for searching the OCLC WorldCat database for cataloging copy for music scores, music sound recordings, and music moving-image materials; editing Library of Congress (LC) and non-LC cataloging copy for music scores, music sound recordings, and music moving-image materials found in WorldCat; and producing bibliographic records. In addition, the Music Cataloging Associate is responsible for identifying and correcting problems in bibliographic and authority records for music materials in the UGA Libraries database. A substantial amount of work is performed on a computer. Work is performed independently, subject to periodic review, and requires the use of discretionary judgment and the acceptance of considerable responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
70% *Produces or replaces cataloging records for music scores, music recordings, and music moving-image materials by editing copy from approved institutions or the Library of Congress (LC) in WorldCat or GIL (the UGA Libraries’ integrated library system), including inputting accurate holdings and item record information in GIL. In addition to handling most of the higher-quality Library of Congress (LC) cataloging copy and so-called “Enhance” copy, the Music Cataloging Associate has considerable responsibility for copy that requires more editing than LC or so-called “Enhance”-institution copy, and may also be asked occasionally to produce original catalog records under review by the Head, Music Cataloging.
10% *Verifies and/or assigns subject headings, name entries, series entries, uniform/preferred titles, and call numbers to cataloging records; verifies descriptive cataloging practice for non-LC records by checking prescribed sources and adjusting cataloging records.
8% *Processes materials handled within the Music Section by inputting item and holdings record information in GIL, and by physically processing materials.
5% *Maintains awareness of current cataloging rules, OCLC procedures, GIL procedures, and Libraries policies and procedures by reading appropriate documentation and meeting with section colleagues on a regular basis
3% Aids in catalog maintenance by identifying errors and problems with bibliographic records (including holdings and item information) and authority records in GIL; and correcting and updating records in the local bibliographic and authority files as circumstances require.
2% Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE and other communication tools; and by attending appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
2% Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the Department and Libraries, and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification required:
Two years of college education AND one year related library experience; OR three years library, archives, information center or related work experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Some formal training in western classical music, including the ability to read standard Western staff notation in both treble and bass clefs.
