Introduction: The Athens branch of Learning in Retirement (with an affiliate in Washington, Georgia) is one of more than 260 "institutes for learning in retirement" established at U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. LIR is a well-defined and self-governed educational community of older learners who develop and direct the intellectual life of their organization.

Currently they are partnered with the UGA Department of Lifelong Education, Adminstration and Policy, the Institute of Gerontology and the Institute for Higher Education. This partnership allows LIR to provide programs featuring some of the university's finest active and retired faculty. In addition to structured courses LIR offers its members a variety of travel and social activities.


Scope And Content: "The Learning in Retirement Papers" consists of materials that help document the activities of the Athens area LIR organization from its inception in 1994 up through the present. Accession UGA 07-031 was received in 2007 and accession UGA 08-026 was received in 2008. The collection includes materials such as Board of Directors meeting minutes, newsletters, membership directories and photographs.

For preservation purposes the collection has been refolded. Photographs were placed in protective sleeves, metal paperclips have been removed and newspaper clippings photocopied onto archival quality paper.
