Finding Aid for Dean Hubert Owens Private Practice Landscaping Projects, 1939-1967 (UGA 05-056)
Record Group: 2-14 (Environmental Design)
2 Bankers Boxes, 2 Newspaper Boxes, 9 Map Folders: 4 Cubic Feet
Creator Note
In addition to serving as Dean of Landscape Architecture and making life-long contributions to the development of environmental design education, Hubert Owens also conducted a private practice in landscape design. These files and plans, often done with his partner, fellow faculty member and noted landscaping specialist Brooks Wigginton, document the development of post-World War II practices.
Whether accompanying a modern or traditional structure, the plans often show a modern interest in making the yard a place of beauty and a center for entertaining. Of particular interest are the plans done for Cason Calloway in the development of Calloway Gardens.
Processing Note
For many years these plans were part of MS 920 in Hargrett Manuscripts and then part of University Archives collection 92-253. The plans, often quite large, were folded into document boxes, leading to their deterioration. For preservation purposes, these materials were separated from 92-253 and placed in this new collection, utilizing newspaper boxes and map folders to better house the plans. This process has been documented in collection history folder 05-056, available upon request.
Due to space limitations it has often been necessary to place materials from one project into three storage locations, as seen on the inventory below.
Boxes 1 and 2 of the collection contain the files of written documentation and small plans. In one case there was no folder accompanying a plan and in other cases folders will be empty if they only contained oversize materials.
Boxes 3 and 4 are oversize newspaper storage boxes which house plans of medium size arranged alphabetically by project title. The inventory below will indicate when a project includes plans in one of these boxes (column four).
The collection is completed with 9 map folders, each containing projects in alphabetical order.
