Finding Aid for J. Frank McGill Peanut Extension Papers 1954-1979 (UGA 03-044)

RG 5.6 Cooperative Extension
14 Linear Feet : 14 Banker's Boxes

Scope and Contents

Dr. Howard "Ted" Smith was a professor of management on the faculty of the University of Georgia's College of Business Administration from 1946 to 1983.

J. Frank McGill was the Cooperative Extension peanut agronomist stationed at the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, Georgia from 1954 until 1980. This collection chiefly consists of bound volumes of his correspondence and various reports relating to the development of the post-war peanut industry in Georgia. The collection also contains Mr. McGill's history of his work in Georgia and around the world, From the Mule to the Moon: a Fifty-Year Collection of Human Interest Experiences About Peanuts, People and Places Across Five Continents. In recognition of his major contributions to agriculture, J. Frank McGill was inducted into the University of Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1996.

Because the collection reflects daily activities so thoroughly, it provides a unique view of the operations of Mr. McGill's service during an important phase in agricultural modernization in the state. Through its pages one can see how the agricultural work of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, as documented in the book The UGA Coastal Plain Experiment Station...The First 75 Years by Max Bass, was carried to practicing farmers and the peanut industry.
