UA 012-028

RG 2-13: Education

4.0 Linear Ft.: Four Bankers Boxes

Introduction:

Carl Glickman's career began in 1968 as a Teacher Corps intern in the rural South during the desegregation of schools. He was later a principal of award winning schools in New Hampshire, and then for three decades a UGA Faculty member in the Departments of Curriculum and Supervision, Educational Leadership, and Social Foundations.

In 1997, he received UGA's highest faculty career award, The University Professorship, for bringing "stature and distinction" to the mission of the University. Two years later, in 1999, Glickman's students named him as the faculty member who had the greatest influence on them "both inside and outside of the classroom"

After retiring from UGA in 2001, he held the first endowed chair in education at Texas State University, San Marcos from 2002-2004 and then returned to UGA for three additional years as Scholar in Residence, mentoring junior faculty. He currently holds the title of Professor Emeritus of Education and is pursuing his interest in creative writing through personal memoirs/essays and short stories.

Scope and Content:

The Carl D. Glickman Papers contain materials dating from 1968 through 2012. The arrangement of these materials allows researchers to study different eras of educational change, practice, and policy at local, state, and national levels; various periods of school site practice; and the individuals who led organizations to transform traditional schooling.

The collection has media coverage and research reports of the various UGA/college partnerships with public schools. These include The Program for School Improvement (PSI), The 21st Century Plan with Clarke County Schools, The Georgia League of Professional Schools, The Atlanta Project with the Jimmy Carter Center, The Rural School Challenge of the Woodruff/Annenberg Initiative, and other collaborations linked to the larger reform efforts to rethink schooling with a public purpose.

Detailed recommendations for state wide reforms commissioned by Georgia's Governors Miller and Barnes, and later by the senior policy staffs of the presidential campaigns of Howard Dean and Barack Obama are found in the collection. Also included, are communications from noted writers, leading educators, state and national policy makers, and local parents, teachers, and citizens. In addition, the collection contains radio interviews, national press club panels, convocations and keynote addresses, and samples of Glickman's later personal memoir/essays and short stories.

Glickman's books on school leadership, educational renewal, and the moral imperative of education are included with personal explanatory notes as to their development. Leadership For Learning, was cited as one of the outstanding education books of 2002. Holding Sacred Ground: Leadership, Courage, And Endurance In Our Schools (2003) was acclaimed as one of the most important writings in education today.

Letters To The Next President; What We Can Do About The Real Crisis In Public Education was chosen by Foreword Magazine as one of the two outstanding books of 2004. Super-Vision And Instructional Leadership co-authored with Steve Gordon and Jovita-Ross-Gordon, in its ninth edition, remains a leading text in the field. Those who dared: Five Visionaries Who Changed American Education (2009) earned praise by Jonathan Kozol as "a treasure to those who carry on the struggle for democratic education."
