The Davis Souvenir Album of the University of Georgia

Plate 9: The Campus. The 1858 iron fence shown here still runs along Broad Street, but the diminished threat of wandering livestock has allowed convenient openings to replace the stiles.

Plate 10: Ex-Chancellor Lipscomb. We estimate the date of the album as 1875 since Chancellor Lipscomb has apparently tendered his resignation, but the album does not recognize Chacellor Mell as his sucessor.

Plate 11: The Athens Confederate Monument. At this point the monument stood some distance up College Avenue. Today is stands in the middle of Broad Street near the University Arch.

Plate 12: Lucy Cobb Institute. At the time the album was assembled this was a private school for young ladies, but since 1931 this 1858 building on Milledge Avenue has been part of the University. Today it houses the Carl Vinson Institute of Government.

Plate 13: The Faculty. The topmost of the three men shown in the center is Lipscomb's successor as chancellor, Patrick Hughes Mell and below him is his successor in turn, Chancellor Henry Holcomb Tucker. The young man with the vigorous sideburns in the upper left corner is Henry Clay White, the second man below his is Leon Henri Charbonnier and in the lower right corner is Charles Morris. The other men shown should be William Henry Waddell, C.P. Willcox, Williams LeRoy Broun, Williams Rutherford, E.M. Pendleton and William Mitchell. As time permits we will work to identify them with more precision.

Plate 14: University High School. This last plate in the album shows the remarkable building nicknamed "Rock College". It was completed just before the Civil War to provide a preparatory school for the University. Standing near the corner of Prince and Oglethorpe Avenue, it served later as part of the State Normal School and UGA's Coordinate Campus. Unfortunately this Victorian delight was demolished when the U.S. Navy acquired the property as the campus of the Supply Corps School.
