About the Hall of Fame
Mission Statement
The UGA Libraries established the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame to recognize Georgia writers, past and present, whose work reflects the character of the state - its land and its people. Although there are a few award programs in the state that recognize specific books, the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame is the first to honor Georgia writers for their overall contribution to our culture.
The Georgia Writers Hall of Fame will be administered through the UGA Libraries' Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The Hargrett Library houses the Georgiana Collection, an unequaled research collection of books about Georgia and Georgians.
The Georgia Writers Hall of Fame will be based on an open ballot nomination process administered by the Head of the Georgiana Collection. The selection of Hall of Fame honorees from among the nominees will be the responsibility of a Board of Judges composed of at least twelve distinguished Georgians with an interest and/or career-related experience in literature and letters. Following the initial selection of twelve "charter members" (writers to be honored posthumously), the Board of Judges will select two or more writers for induction into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame each year.
The Hargrett Library will host an annual ceremony recognizing the authors being honored. Within the Georgiana Collection, a prominently placed plaque will display the names of those inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame. An exhibit in the Hargrett Library will further recognize those honored and a corresponding virtual exhibit will be available to a worldwide audience via the Internet.
Along with honoring the authors whose works constitute our state's rich literary heritage, the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame program will accomplish other objectives. It will focus statewide attention on the University and further establish the institution as a major proponent of Georgia literature and letters. The program will provide avenues for outreach in communities and schools, as well as encouraging interaction and participation among writers, librarians, and readers.
