Debate: The Legal Drinking Age in Georgia

The Georgia Debate Union and the Barkley Forum Center for Debate, Deliberation, and Dialogue at Emory University will host a debate in the auditorium of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. The topic: The State of Georgia should lower Minimum Legal Drinking Age.

Minimum drinking age laws have been topics of conversation and controversy in the United States for centuries, most notably during the Prohibition era. Yet, debates over drinking age laws continue even today, including the state of Georgia.  Michael's Law is just the latest example of state-level proposals that aim to address underage drinking and its myriad consequences.   This debate hopes to shed light upon the ever-salient issue of drinking age laws, an issue that remains pertinent to university communities in Georgia and across the nation. The event was inspired by the recent exhibit, "Spirited: Prohibition in America" and upcoming exhibit, "Wrestling Temptation: The Quest to Control Alcohol in Georgia," both on display in the Russell Library Gallery of the Special Collections Building.

The event is free and open to the public.
